When polled, 52% of Americans named cleaning the bathroom their least favorite chore. Understandably so, considering it can be a nasty place to clear up.

To keep this area spick and span, you’ll need a little more than just elbow grease. In this article, we’ll tell you the best way to clean a toilet. It’ll be so spotless you can eat off of it! (Although we don’t recommend doing this!)

Disinfect the Toilet

Let’s start with the fun part! When getting toilet bowl cleaner, try to go for ones that have oxygen bleach or hydrogen peroxide. Those with chlorine bleach can be quite harsh and cause irritation in your lungs when you breathe it in and on your skin if you touch it.

If you want to be eco-friendly, you can make your own toilet bowl cleaner. Just mix together a 1:1 ratio of baking soda and distilled white vinegar and pour it into the toilet.

Squeeze the toilet bowl cleaner all around the porcelain throne, including under the rims. Don’t be afraid to use too much cleaner; the more, the better.

Let the cleaner do its work. You’ll have to wait at least 5 to 10 minutes, so while you’re waiting, move onto the next steps.

Clean the Outside

When cleaning the toilet, the majority of people forget to clean the outside of it. Get a disinfectant spray and spritz the outside surfaces of the toilet.

While you may be impatient to get the job done, the best thing to do is to wait at least 5 minutes before wiping off the disinfectant spray. That way, you ensure the germs are killed off.

Clean Surrounding Surfaces

Unfortunately, bacteria isn’t contained to just your toilet. When you flush, the germs can spray everywhere, including on the walls and floor.

You’ll want to get your handy disinfectant spray again to spritz all nearby surfaces, including the toilet brush holder. Again, wait at least 5 minutes before you wipe the spray off.

Clean the Toilet

Get the toilet brush and scrub away all the stains that have built up. If there are rust-colored stains, use a pumice stone to scrub those mineral stains off.

Flush the toilet and rinse the brush in the clean water. Then, pour some of your toilet cleaner over it while holding it out of the bowl. After a minute, wash it off inside the toilet.

Let your brush air dry before putting it back into the holder. That way, bacteria won’t grow in a favorably moist environment.
